Breast Augmentation

During the first consultation all information regarding the liposculpture treatment will be discussed such as: what method is best for you, what results you can expect, the possible risks and the aftercare. You will always receive honest advice and clear information about the treatment and the period after it. In addition, the doctor examines whether you are a suitable candidate for a breast augmentation. He will then ask you about your medical history, what medication you are currently taking, and so forth. Note that if you use any blood thinning medication, you should stop at least one week before the treatment. The doctor will also ask what your wishes and expectations are. He can then indicate whether the surgery can meet those expectations and whether a combination with another treatment method can be an option. Before the operation, the surgeon will discuss with you the surgical technique (in front of or behind the muscle), the type and volume of the implant. The doctor will give you additional information regarding the pre- and aftercare.

You will receive a preoperative prescription for a course of antibiotics for 1 to 2 weeks, which serves as coverage over the operation. You will also receive an antiseptic, iodine-containing soap to clean yourself the day before the operation and the morning before the operation. No body lotion and/or nail polish to be used before the procedure. Because you will be placed under sedation anesthesia, no solid or liquid food should be taken 6 hours prior to the procedure.

Pictures will be taken before the treatment for your medical file. The insertion of the implants can be done through different incisions: through the armpit, through an incision at the border of the areola or through an incision under the breast. We normally use the latter incision. The small scar is about 4-5 cm in size and comes just in the lower fold of the breast. The implants are placed in front of or behind the pectoral muscle. The average duration of surgery is 1 hour. The operation takes place under the insertion of a local anaesthetic fluid into the breast (local anaesthetic) in combination with sedation or general anaesthesia, which will allow you to recover faster and the operation can be performed on an outpatient basis. 

When you feel well and the doctor is satisfied, you will be discharged. You are not allowed to drive, therefore ensure that you arrange for someone to take you home. During the first two weeks, you will have to wear a connecting T-shirt or sports bra- day and night (after four weeks you only wear it during the day) – that supports the new shape of your breasts and prevents swelling. On average, the swelling will be significantly less after three days. After 48 hours, you can shower again, taking off the bra. We recommend that you rest for a few days after the operation. After this you can resume to your daily activities, but avoid heavy exertion during the first weeks. It is important that there is no pressure or tension on your breasts during the first weeks. Two weeks after the treatment, you will return to the clinic to have the stitches removed. The swelling will disappear in the course of two to six weeks. In the beginning, the feeling in your nipples may be different. This varies from very sensitive to numb. You will gradually have the normal feeling return to your nipples. It is difficult to tell how long it will last as it varies from person to person. The first months, the scars can be quite fiery. After that, they will steadily take on the color of the skin and become less visible. It’s important not to expose the scars to the sun during the first year after the operation. The sun can cause them to discolor and bulge, so they remain visible longer. Keep the scars covered or smear them with a very high protection factor (SPF 50).

Pain during the first days can best be alleviated with Paracetamol 4 x 500 mg per day. Aspirin is forbidden at all times.
Implant behind the muscle is more painful than before.
Infection is very rare, but not impossible. Because an implant (a foreign body) is used, you will get antibiotics before, during and after surgery. In case of infection, the implant may have to be removed temporarily.

After pain, Swelling, Blue Discoloration:
Blue discoloration and swelling are quite normal during the first weeks. In the beginning, one breast may be more swollen or sensitive than the other, this normalizes after a few weeks.

A wound may bleed after the procedure or the scars may temporarily become red and thick. A disturbed wound healing can rarely cause a permanently wide scar.
Other risks of breast augmentation include: ability to feel the edges of the implant, implant displacement, and wrinkling.
Excessive Connective Tissue Encapsulation is where the body responds to the implant by forming a skin-thin capsule around the implant. This is a natural process but the chances of this occurring are 1-2%. Sometimes capsule contracture occurs, where the body reacts too strongly and a rather stiff and hard capsule is formed. The implant is then deformed by the capsule into a hard sphere. This can be sensitive and painful. If this happens, we can remove the capsule and possibly replace the implant. Due to the new implants with a rough surface (textured implants), the risk of capsular contracture is considerably reduced. It is important to give the wound area rest after surgery. Six weeks of no exercise is necessary for a good healing and for the prevention of capsular contracture.
A ruptured implant must always be replaced. With the current cohesive (solid) silicone filling, however, the contents will no longer flow out.
